Born Oct. 8, 1915, he was a son of the late Joe W. and Mary Guess. He was also preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Goldie Tennessee "Tennie" Guess; his second wife, Callie Johnson Guess; one daughter, Shirley Rose Browning; one son, Curtis James Guess; two sisters, Berthie Hensley and Stella May Damron; four brothers, Haven Guess, Billy Guess, David Guess and Nolan Guess, and one step-brother, Jay Casey.
Rev. Guess was a retired coal miner with 33 years of service and a member of the UMWA. Ordained in 1971, he was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Leuria Guess; one daughter, Marilyn F. Adkins of Lake; two sons, David G. (Carol) Guess of Goldsboro, N.C., and Alfred L. (Tojoe) Guess of Lake; one sister, Irene Quick of Chapmanville; two brothers, Norman Guess of Plant City, Fla., and Winston Guess of Germany; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a host of additional family and friends.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at the James Funeral Home Chapel at Aracoma with Rev. Barney Goins and Rev. Joe Pritchard officiating. Burial will follow in the Ball Cemetery at Lake.
