Richard John Gensheimer, 81, of Erie, died Wednesday, August 8, 2012. He was born in Erie, Pa., on October 19, 1930, the only son of the late Alice Baker Gensheimer and Chester Gensheimer. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Alice Bougie Gensheimer, whom he married on July 12, 1952. A 1948 graduate of Cathedral Preparatory School, in 1952 Dick earned degrees in biology and English from Gannon University while serving in the ROTC.

He was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and served in the military police at Karlsruhe, Germany, during the Korean War. For 25 years Dick worked for Firch's Baking Company, establishing the company's first personnel department and later becoming plant manager. After he left Firch's, he and his wife Mary Alice owned and operated Barton's Card and Gift Shop in the Liberty Plaza for 12 years. Known for his health education programs in area schools and his smoking cessation classes for adults, Dick became a lifelong advocate for preventing lung disease.
