He was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and served in the military police at Karlsruhe, Germany, during the Korean War. For 25 years Dick worked for Firch's Baking Company, establishing the company's first personnel department and later becoming plant manager. After he left Firch's, he and his wife Mary Alice owned and operated Barton's Card and Gift Shop in the Liberty Plaza for 12 years. Known for his health education programs in area schools and his smoking cessation classes for adults, Dick became a lifelong advocate for preventing lung disease.
In later years, he was a substitute teacher at Mercyhurst Preparatory School and at Erie's Collegiate Academy. Dick was a true gentleman in every aspect of his life. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to strangers and loved ones alike. His happiest moments were spent with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mary Alice, Dick is survived by two daughters, Ann Wilkes and John Gennaro of Fairfax, Va., and Amy Patsy and Marty Dearbeck of Erie; one son, Richard J. Gensheimer Jr., and his wife Lisa; six grandchildren, David and Nicholas Wilkes, Andrew and Christopher Patsy, and Emily and Beth Gensheimer; his brother-in-law Dr. James Bougie; and his daughter-in-law Marcia Gensheimer and friend Paul Francis.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Francis V. Kloecker Funeral Home, Inc. 2502 Sassafras Street, Erie, PA 16502. The family will receive friends and family at St. James Church, 2635 Buffalo Road, on Saturday, August 11, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
