Margaret was the fourth child and first daughter born of Johann Hoffman and his first wife Margaret Horsch. She arrived in the United States with her family in 1856. The family farmed briefly in LeSueur Minnesota but moved to 80 acres of farmland just south of St. Benedict in Scott County, MN in 1864.

In 1871 a neighboring farmer Christian Busch's wife Margaret died leaving him with seven children. The next year he married Margaret Hoffman, 19 years his junior. Together they had at least 13 children, six daughters and seven sons.
