Edward Walter Kays was born Feb. 11, 1935, the son of Edwin and Helen (Stokke) Kays, in Sarles, N.D. He grew up in the Sarles-Calvin, N.D., area, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 12 years from Nov. 13, 1953 to Jan. 12, 1966. He served in Germany, Greenland and the United States. He married Marian Erickson in 1962, in Casselton, N.D. They lived in Emerado, where he worked on road construction. In August 1966, he began working in civil service at the Grand forks Air Force Base until retiring in 1982. He was then employed by private contractors on the Air Force Base until 1998, in transit plane alert. He also raised farm animals. He is survived by his wife; daughters, Dianna Hoshaw, Mayville, N.D., Catherine (Dan) Schefter, Langdon, N.D., Jan Ruud, Emerado, N.D., and Amy (Dean) Raines, Oklahoma City, Okla.; a son, Edward Jr., Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his mother, Langdon; and sisters, Altie (Verlin) Albrecht, Wales, N.D., Gladys Howard, Huxley, Iowa, and Wilma Holt, Ames, Iowa.
Edward Kays, 65, Emerado, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at home.

He was preceded in death by his father; a daughter, Pamela Ganyo; and a brother, Jackie.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Arvilla (N.D.) Presbyterian Church.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Bakke Funeral Home, Larimore, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Sunset Prairie Cemetery , Emerado. , Military rites: Ted Valerius Post No. 97 of the Larimore American Legion.
