British Army General. Sir Duncan Cameron was a British Army General who served as Major General and commander of the British forces in New Zealand during the New Zealand Wars. He served in the military since 1825 where by 1843 he held the rank of lieutenant-colonel. During the Crimean War, he commanded a battalion at the Battle of Alma which saw him appointed commander of the Highland Brigade which he commanded during the Battle of Balaclava and the Siege of Sevastopol. After the Crimean War, he served on the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom and was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Scotland as well as awarded many prestigious honours. In 1861, he traveled to New Zealand where he served as Major General, replacing Major-General Thomas Pratt. Cameron, along with Governor-General Thomas Gore Browne, planned an invasion of the Waikato to deal a final blow to rebelling Māori however, this was denied after Browne was replaced by George Grey. Cameron then directed the construction of the Main North Road before leading attacks in the Second Taranaki War and the subsequent Invasion of the Waikato where he lead the battles at places such as Rangiriri and Ōrākau. He later suffered a massive defeat at Gate Pā during the Tauranga Campaign. The Invasion of the Waikato and the Tauranga Campaign did not end the Māori King Movement as planned however, it ended rebellion in the Waikato and the land ceded to the crown. Cameron grew more disillusioned with George Grey's plans and determined that to cease hostilities would be achieved by other means. He resigned his post and returned to England where he was appointed as the Governor of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst as well as appointed as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. He had also been made a Knight of the Order of the Bath for his actions at the Battle of Rangiriri. He sustained significant criticism for his actions in New Zealand and is remembered as a contentious figure.
