Joseph M. Phillips, one of the old settlers and prominent men of the county passed away at this home last Sunday July 21, 1912. He was a man held in high esteem by a large number of friends, particularly be missed by the people of the eastern part of Marion county, where he lived for so long.
Joseph Maurice Phillips was born to Isaac and Nancy (Hays) Philips in Antioch, OH. on Mar. 7,1839. He came to Kansas in 1869 to Jefferson county, then removed to Marion county in 1876. He married Lucy A. (Read) Harper in Topeka, KS on July 3, 1870. To this union were born five children; Ethel Collett, Edith, Herbert, Evertt, and Lee. The three step-children are John, Rachel (Harper) Benbow,and Will Harper.
He was preceded in death by Lee and John.
He served in the Union Army as second lieutenant in the 179th infantry.
Funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. A.J. Bixler.
Burial was in Elk Cemetery.
