MARCH 17, 1926 – OCTOBER 7, 2015
Leona (Mickie) Marie Gore passed away peacefully on October 7 at home with her loved ones by her side. Mickie was born on March 17, 1926 in Salina, Kansas to the late William Edward and Mary Alice (Zawaski) O'Grady. After graduating from Salina High School in 1943, she attended Marymount College, earning a four-year scholarship as a Piano Major. She met her husband George on a blind date in 1944, at Camp Phillips, shortly before he was sent overseas with the 44th Infantry Division. On June 27, 1946, they were married in the Basilica of The Sacred Heart at Notre Dame University. She continued to study piano at Notre Dame with Dr. Daniel Pedkte and attended the Conservatory of Music in South Bend for music theory. Once George and Mickie started a family, being a traditional wife and mother became her primary endeavor. They moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1950, and throughout the years, Mickie was an active volunteer with many groups, including the Women's Advisory Council, Notre Dame University; Junior Chamber of Commerce Auxiliary; Holy Cross Hospital Auxiliary; Ralph J. Baudhuin Oral School of Nova University (founder and board member); National League of American Pen Women (President and Woman of the Year); Fort Lauderdale Debutante Committee (Chairman); American Heart Association; American Federation of University Women; Federation of Music Clubs, Morning Musicales; and Sea Ranch Lakes Women's Club (founder), among others. In 1979, Mickie returned to college and completed her undergraduate major, earning her BA from Florida Atlantic University. She had a gift for piano, as a concert artist and composer, performing and earning accolades locally, throughout the state, and nationally. Mickie also had a talent for communicating through words, and as a writer, she was published in periodicals nationwide, winning numerous awards for her works of poetry, short stories and non-fiction.
Mickie found her greatest joy through her love for family, dedication to helping others, and devotion to her Catholic faith. Most important to Mickie was her role as wife to George, who predeceased her in 2012, and as mother to her four children, Stephen H. Gore, Gregory J. Gore, Georgene Gore Urbanek and Kathleen Gore Whitney. Seven grandchildren further enriched her life. She and George held many family gatherings at their homes in Sea Ranch Lakes, FL, Sebastian, FL and Washington, CT. Her dedication to her loved ones was an inspiration and will remain with us forever.
Our family wishes to thank from our hearts her primary caregivers, Vivienne Chin-James and Jean Campbell, who comforted and cared for her so well.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, October 16th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Kraeer-Fairchild Funeral Home, at 4061 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL. A Funeral Mass will take place on October 17th at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 2100 South Ocean Boulevard, Pompano Beach, followed by a private family burial at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Mausoleums. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name be made to Catholic Charities, USA.
