Dr. Godley came to the Richmond area in 1948 and began working at Virginia State College (now university) as a conservationist. He served with the Department of Agriculture from 1963 until 1974, returning to the university as an associate professor of agronomy and research director of science and education administration and teaching. He was a soil scientist whose professional associations included the American Society of Agronomy, the Soil Science Society of America and the Caste Council of Agriculture. He was also a member of the Epsilon Phi Botanical Honorary Society, the Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of Agriculture and the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
A funeral service was held Friday, June 23, 1989 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of the James M. Wilkerson Funeral Home.
