Michael Kurt Bothum "Mickey" was born March 13, 1945 to Myles and Judith (Petterson) Bothum. He had a big brother, Jack, waiting for him at home. He spent his early years in Kennedy and attended school in Kennedy and Halma, graduating from Karlstad High School in 1963. During his growing up years, he spent a lot of time with his grandparents on both sides of the family while his parents traveled. He grew up with many cousins near his own age and they were his first friends.
He joined the National Guard in 1964 and was at Camp Ripley with the 47th Infantry Division. Mickey had several other careers. He worked at the North Star News; he was a DJ for KRWB in Roseau, where he went by Mike Kurtis, and then worked for the US Dept of Agriculture for more than 30 years. He attended Brown Institute before going into radio and spent quality time in the Twin Cities with his cousin Malvern and her family.
Mickey had a lot of hobbies. He loved to talk on the phone to stay connected to family and friends. He loved to golf. He was an avid photographer and his albums and rounds of slides are filled with portraits of friends and relatives. He had a beautiful garden and had a lot of knowledge on what grows the biggest crops in NW Minnesota, especially potatoes. He loved music and loved to dance, and he loved to watch the stock market and speculate on which stocks were going to do well. Mickey was a big football fan. He and his nephew, Dallas, played Fantasy Football together for more than 30 years and would even win a few championships now and then.
He loved deer hunting. He shot many deer over the years and loved being at the cabin when family was in town for hunting season. He'd always take the time to do a final count of deer around the area the night before the season opened. That way people knew their chances of getting a deer.
Mickey was half Swedish and half Norwegian. He appreciated his Scandanavian heritage and even took a trip to Sweden with his parents in 1979 to visit family. He loved to carry on traditions, especially the art of eating lutefisk. Not only was it served on Christmas Eve, but he traveled to lutefisk suppers in the area whenever he could.
He also traveled to Branson, the Black Hills and spent many winters in Arizona with Bonnie.
Mickey and Bonnie (Rhude) Anderson got reacquainted more than 20 years ago. They had known each other from their early years as Bonnie had also graduated from Karlstad, but lived separate adult lives. They got married on December 21, 2021 and he gained a ready-made family of stepdaughter, Virginia and two stepsons, Barry and Eric. All have families and live in Washington state near the foothills of Mt. Rainier. Bonnie and Mickey enjoyed the last 8 months together as a married couple. They loved to dance and travel to Arizona in the winter. Bonnie was Mickey's most excellent caregiver for this last year.
He's survived by his wife, Bonnie, and her children: Virginia, Barry and Eric and their families; his niece Marna (Jim); nephews Shane (Lori) and Dallas (Leah); great nieces Ashley, Jacalyn, Katelyn and Nevada; great nephew, Beau (Brooke); great-great-nieces Alysha, Hailey, Molly, Berkleigh and Rawlings; great-great-nephew Briggs; plus many more cousins and other relatives. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Keith, in infancy; his brother, Jack, and sister-in-law, Loretta.
To all who knew him, Mickey was always in a good mood and fun to be around. He had many great friends, was a great storyteller and remembered things from the past like they happened yesterday.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM, Sunday, August 14, 2022 at First Lutheran Church of Karlstad with Pastor Caitlyn Jensen presiding.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment services will be held at Eidsvold Lutheran Cemetery following services.
