It is with deep sadness that we must share the news that my dad, Wendell Anthony Hartfield, passed to his rest this morning with our family by his side. He was the strongest, most courageous man we've ever known and we will miss him deeply. We cannot wait for that glorious resurrection day when we will reunite with him and every tear will be wiped away for eternity.
We plan to hold a service within the next week and will share details when they are finalized. Thank you all for your prayers and support this summer as his health declined.

This is a poem Anthony's brother in law, Dale Adams, wrote and read at the funeral, which so beautifully encapsulated exactly who Anthony was, one in a million.

ONE IN A MILLION

Some here may not have known Anthony all that well;
with your indulgence I have a few stories to tell.

So it's my hope for you as we meet today
that you will know Anthony better as we go our way.

He came from Mississippi, a Real Gentleman in every way;
certainly not the Southerner as seen on television today.

Being from the south, some are thinking "I bet we agreed politically", perhaps, but he never missed Rachel on MSNBC!

He attended Bass Academy, an outstanding athlete I've heard tell;
I believe some of his track records have not fell.

He was charming and making great friends came easy;
we welcome Ron who made the trip from Tennessee.

After graduation he was eager to spread his wings
but Vietnam was calling and he could not ignore that ring.

He completed his term and with honor served our country well;
about this time he sensed something was wrong. He knew, he could tell.....

Doctors were puzzled with his case, he was an example to the interns;
of course, that did little to alleviate his concerns.

He is One in a Million, they would all say;
which we already knew but not in a medical way.

Soon after his service he launched a career in beautiful Tennessee, unloading boxcars of sugar and flour for O.D.McKee.

During this time at Collegedale, he made his most important decision while searching for a wife;
he met an Arkie from the Ozarks, and convinced Diana to share his life.

Vows were exchanged and being deeply in love, there was no need for wealth;
in a few short years she would honor her pledge of "in sickness and in health".

Heading for Alaska to start a family was their plan;
this was the seventies and they were prepared. Anthony grew a beard and they had a V W Hippie Van!!

Best laid plans can quickly change, it can happen to any of us;
We were truly blessed when they moved to Arkansas and became a vital part of Adams Truss.

His physical condition continued to deteriorate.
It never affected his work or his cheerful attitude, as he had long ago resigned himself to his fate.

Some folks witnessed his struggles and I would hear them say;
"heck, if I were him I'd be home drawing disability pay!"

God graced them with a child...when Anna came onboard;
she needed major surgeries and this drew them even closer to the Lord.

As we know now, God had big plans for Anna and the Devil believed that was true;
he would try to take her life through several critical surgeries and a bad car wreck too.

On his way to the accident, Anthony pleaded with God for a deal;
"let me find my family alive and meat will never be any part of my meal"

You see, he had been struggling for some time trying to give up meat;
he believed God wanted him on a diet of veggies and fruit, which was healthier to eat.

Baby Anna was found unscathed still buckled in her car seat, in the middle of a briar patch, That was Unreal!!
Just lucky it seems??? or perhaps this was God accepting Anthony's Deal!

Diana suffered broken collar bones and I'm sure much pain; the Van,
yes, that Van, got the worst of it never to be driven again.

Oh Yes, Anthony kept his promise and never ate meat again;
I know, because the devil made me tempt him now and then.

In closing, I suspect he fought many battles that we do not know;
but God in his mercy saw enough, it was time to go.

The evil affliction left a broken body, it finally took its toll;
but do not despair for God now forever, claims his soul.
