A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, January 25, at First Baptist Church, Greensboro, with family visitation immediately following the service.

Caroline was born on January 14, 1925, the youngest of four children born to Lessie Perry and Matthew Summerlin in Mount Olive, NC. She met and married Marion Clebon Barbee shortly after WWII, and remained his loving and devoted wife for 61 years. Caroline and Marion lived in Roanoke, and she remained there following his death until 2009, when she moved to Greensboro to be closer to her remaining family.

She graduated from Woman's College (now UNCG) with a Bachelor's degree in Secretarial Science, and taught business education in the Roanoke City Schools for 30 years.

Caroline was known for her cheerful, positive attitude, her gracious smile, and her selflessness and concern for others. She loved spending time with family and friends, and went out of her way to make everyone feel welcome. She enjoyed her free time at home and was a voracious reader. When she was younger, she enjoyed working in the yard, hiking in the mountains, and playing tennis and golf.

She was active in many organizations. She and her mother and sisters were members of the Lew Wallace DAR in New Mexico. For many of her retirement years, she volunteered for public radio as a reader for the visually impaired. Caroline remained active while living at Abbotswood in Irving Park, serving as an ambassador to new residents, arranging the flowers in the dining room, and volunteering in many other capacities.

Caroline loved the Lord, and exemplified His grace, compassion and love in her life. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke for most of her life. After moving to Greensboro, she transferred her membership to First Baptist Church where she was actively involved in the Charity class.

Surviving family include her son, Phil Barbee and his wife Laura Lomax, both of Greensboro, her grandson Chris Barbee, wife Dora and their children Natalie and Foster, of Roi Et, Thailand, grandson Hunter Barbee of Greensboro, and Chris and Hunter's mother Andee Morford and her husband Duane. Also surviving is her sister, Frances Robertson Kabzenell of Albuquerque, NM. Preceding her in death were her husband, Marion Barbee, sister Lessie Summerlin Kabzenell, and brother Matthew Summerlin.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 608 Campbell Ave., SW, Roanoke, VA 24016, to First Baptist Church, 1000 West Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27401, or to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro, PO Box 3402, Greensboro, NC 27402.
