America Lois Perry studied voice, piano and violin at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She was guest soloist on the Major Bowes radio program in New York.
Following her performance, she boarded a commuter train at Cleveland to return to Akron, Ohio. The train collided with another train and caught fire. Ms. Perry died from her injuries July 31, 1940, at the age of twenty, her life and promising career cut short.
Her funeral service was conducted in Ohio. A second service was held at First African Baptist Church, Lexington. Her remains were brought here for burial beside those of other family members.
