Jan was born in Kona, Hawaii on May 27, 1944 to Arthur Akao and Juliette Lindsey. Jan moved to the mainland and spent most of her life residing in Indiana before retiring in Henderson, Nevada. Jan married her true love, Larry, on Valentine's Day in 1975 and together they raised their blended family in Indiana. A woman of faith and the heart of her family, Jan led by a Christian example. With an appreciation for life, Jan loved to sing, study the bible, spend time with her friends and family – especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren – and always expressed her love for them. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter, and joking around, will never be forgotten.

Jan is survived by her husband of 47 years, Larry Grocox; her seven children, Shari Harrell, Gary Smith (wife Trish), Debbie Grocox, Kim Morel, Temple Mullen, Tammy Lovell (husband Robb) and David Grocox (wife Jessica); her 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Evangeline Macaysa and Pearl Keanaaina. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Merle Bidad, Thelma Ontai and Ella Hanohano; her brothers Arthur Akao Jr. and Oliver Akao; and her grandson Brandon Smith.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022 at 9:30 am at Palm Southwest Mortuary located at 7979 W. Warm Springs Road, Las Vegas, NV, 89113. A reception will follow after the service at Club Madeira Canyon Clubhouse located at 2721 Bonaparte Lane, Henderson, NV 89044.
