KIRKLAND, MYRTLE EDWINA GETFORD "NANA", July 29, 1913 - January 28, 2008.

A lifelong resident of Lake County from pioneer families who settled this area of Central Florida before Florida was even a state, passed away in her home in Eustis on Monday, January 28, 2008. She was one of seven children born to a pioneer family, Jess and Lillie Getford, who came to Eustis in the late 1880's. She married Martin Kirkland in 1929 whose family settled in the Paisley area in the early 1800's.

Martin preceeded her in death in 1972. She raised four children, Martin Kirkland, Jr. (deceased) of San Jose, CA; Perry A. Kirkland of Eustis, FL; Marilyn (Sissie) Davis of Eustis, FL; Janelle K. Hicks (Bob) of Clemson, SC. She has one remaining sibling, her sister Jessie Getford Kirkland of Eustis, FL.

Myrtle has been a member of the First Church of Christ for over 75 years where she served for years as Children's Sunday School Teacher and on many other committees. She served as President of the PTA for all grades in the Eustis School System. She was a member of the first sixth grade class at Eustis Elementary School. She has been Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, held a Grand Office for State of Florida, the honor of the Grand Cross of Color and a member for over 50 years. She was active for over 80 years in several other community organizations: a charter member of the Azala Garden Club; life member of the Eustis Woman's Club and active with the Holly Ball; contributed many historical items from her family to the Eustis Historical Society. In 1980 she was chosen as the Washington's Birthday Parade Orange Queen. She was always willing to help people in need. In later years she enjoyed sending birthday cards to her many friends and family.

Her seven grandchildren, Perry (Dolph) Kirkland, Jr. (Debby) of Eustis, FL; Christy K. Christie (deceased) of Eustis, FL; Edward (Eddie) Kirkland of Cassia, FL; Denise (DeeDee) Branham (Jeff) of Columbus, GA; Tamela (Tammie) Parnell (Tad) of Frisco, TX; Robyn Hicks of Clemson, SC; Jenna Hicks Lawrence of Atlanta, GA.

Her seven great-grandchildren, Christopher (Chris) Kirkland (Lesley) of Umatilla, FL; Nicole (Niki) Kirkland of Umatilla, FL; Zachariah (Zach) Christie (Colleen) of Tavares, FL; Joshua (Josh) Christie of Tavares, FL; Ashley Branham of Columbus, GA; Emily Parnell and Blake Parnell of Frisco, TX. Two great-great grandchildren, Alyssa and Garrett Kirkland of Umatilla, FL.
