OBITUARY: The Manti Messenger, Thursday 7 April 1904:
BISHOP JAMES A. ALLRED DEAD.
Spring City, Utah, April 3. – Bishop James A. Allred died at his home in this city this morning after a prolonged illness. He leaves two wives and five children. A son is filling a mission in the Southern States. Bishop Allred was a well-known citizen of Utah and one of the most prominent citizens of Sanpete. He was one of the oldest, if not the oldest, bishop in the church. He was born in Bedford county, Tennessee, November 22, 1819, becing about 85 years old. He came to Utah in 1861 with an independent company under Capt. William McKissick. He served as county selectman in Sanpete for two years.
Bishop Allred was the first Mayor of Spring City and served five terms in succession. He resigned the office of Mayor to accept that of Probate Judge, to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Judge Peacock. He was president of the Spring City Co-op for twenty-nine years, ever since its organization. In every position Mr. Allred displayed marked ability and the best of judgment.
Bishop Allred will be greatly missed by his friends and associates. He was highly respected and was much looked to for advice.
