Dona Wertz Hattey, 94, of Independence, MO, passed away Friday, August 19, 2022, at the Villages of Jackson Creek, Independence, MO.
Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. August 26, 2022, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO, 64055, 816-373-3600. Graveside services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence, MO. A memorial service will be August 27, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Community of Christ Gudgell Park Congregation, 500 E. Gudgell Ave., Independence, MO, 64055.
Dona was born in Westby, Montana on July 17, 1928, the daughter of Margaret (Mott) and Henry Wertz. Dona moved to Williston, North Dakota upon her mother's marriage to Mike Kellar. When Dona was 10, she and her brother moved to Independence, Missouri. Dona married Jack Hattey on December 8, 1946. They briefly lived in San Diego until Jack completed his military service. After being discharged from military service, Dona and Jack purchased the family farm in Bates City, MO. Dona worked at Lake City Ammunition Plant before moving to Independence in 1958 where they resided with their 4 children. Dona and Jack operated Jack's Concrete Flatwork Co. until he retired in 1989. Dona worked for the Community of Christ Church in the legal department as a paralegal for almost 30 years. She attended William Jewel College in the 1980's to obtain her certification as a paralegal and retired in 1993. Later in life she worked with her daughter's family, and friends at Hattey's on Main and Estate Sales by Bonnie.
Dona's many talents included being an accomplished seamstress, making clothing, costumes, wedding dresses and countless beautiful quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Dona was a ferocious reader and studied her beloved dictionary. She loved watching her Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. Dona was dedicated member of the Community of Christ Church serving her church as an ordained Elder.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years in 2006; her son Brad Hattey in 2016, along with 3 Sisters, Irene, Beverly, and Lois.
Dona is survived by daughter Bonnie Hutchcroft Hattey of Blue Springs Mo, daughter, and her husband Brenda (Hattey) and Terry Flowers of Independence, MO and son Barny Hattey of Eastern Jackson County, MO, 9 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Dona is also survived by her brother Derold Wertz of St George, Utah and sister-in-law Jeanette Hattey Jackson of Houston, Texas.
