Chelan – Hugh L. Courtney, 77, long-time resident of the Chelan-Stehekin area, died this morning in a Wenatchee rest home after a year's illness.

Born Dec. 3, 1886, in Topeka, Kans., he attended school in Dundee, Ill. He came West in 1900, living a year at Chelan. After a year's residence in the East, he returned to Chelan in 1902. Mr. Courtney married Mary Louise (Mamie) Moore Nov. 10, 1910, in Chelan, and they lived at Moore's Inn on Lake Chelan, helping Mrs. Courtney's mother, Mrs. J. Robert Moore. In 1912 they moved to Chelan where they lived until they went to Stehekin in 1917. Mr. Courtney worked for the forest service for many years at Stehekin. His wife died in 1950. Mr. Courtney was a member of the Chelan Masonic Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons 118.

Surviving are: three sons, Laurence Courtney, Wenatchee, Curt and Ray Courtney, both of Stehekin; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Barnhart, Wenatchee; one step-son, Harwood Lotspiech, Wenatchee; one step-daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Byrd, Wenatchee; 16 grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.

The body is at the Smith Funeral Home in Chelan, pending arrangements.
