Bertie graduated from high school, then attended Oregon State University (OSU), where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. She married William "Bill" Gilbert on July 29, 1950. She then earned a Master of Science in 1956 from OSU. Bertie taught K-12 education for 42 years, retiring in 1995.
Bertie is preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Richard; grandson, Curtis Williamson.; and her beloved husband, Bill.
She is survived by her sister, Theresa Gaines; three children, Carolyn Rose, Nanette (Mike) Uerkvitz, Darrell (Margie) Gilbert; honorary son, Rob (Karen) Scholz, 12 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life to honor Bertie will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m., at Oakridge United Methodist Church, 48137 E. 1st St. Reception to follow.
Contributions in her memory can be made to the Oakridge Pioneer Museum or any charity of choice.
