US Congressman. The second of four Hamilton Fishes to serve in Congress, he attended private schools in the United States and Switzerland, and graduated from Columbia University in 1869. When his father served as US Secretary of State he was his father's Private Secretary. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1873 and became an attorney in New York City. A Republican, Fish served in the New York Assembly from 1874 to 1896, and was Speaker from 1895 to 1896. In 1903 he was appointed Assistant Treasurer of the United States, and served until 1908. In 1908 he was a successful candidate for the United States House of Representatives and served one term, March 4, 1909 to March 3, 1911. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1910, afterwards retiring to Garrison. He died while staying with his daughter at her winter home.
