Lewis Edward Carter, age 84, of West Salem, Illinois, formerly of Clay City, passed away Wednesday evening, August 24, 2022, at his home.

He was born July 31, 1938, in Bridgeport, the son of Harold and Alice (Wilson) Carter.

Lewis was a graduate of Clay City High School. He proudly served in the Marines from April 1959 until May 1963. He drove a truck and worked bridge construction for several years. He worked at Quantum Chemical Plant for many years as well, before retiring and moving to West Salem. Lewis enjoyed gardening, beekeeping, horseback riding, cooking, and spending time with family.

He is survived by his five children; nine grandchildren; three siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father: Harold Carter; mother: Alice Gill; a son: Dale Carter; stepfather: Robert Guy Staley; stepfather: Gaylord Gill; a brother: Harold Carter Jr.; and 2 sisters: Shirley Garrett and Marilyn White.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Military funeral honors will be presented at the beginning of the ceremony. Private interment will take place in Clay City Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 -3 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations are suggested to Clay County Cancer Crusaders and will be accepted through the funeral home.
