Louis F. Armbruster, 80, a resident of the Cornelius community, died on Friday, August 26, 2022, at his home.

Louis "Lou" Francis Armbruster (Lima Alpha) was a kind and giving man, with a great sense of humor and laugh. He was born November 6, 1941, in Wyandotte, Michigan, the son of the late Theo Burcz and Vincent Armbruster. He was raised and received his education in the Grosse Ile, Michigan community, having been a graduate of the Grosse Ile High School Class of 1959. He later attended Michigan Tech University, having majored in Forest Management. It was here that he began his military training in the ROTC program.

He was united in marriage to Loretta "Lori" on July 28, 1971, at Elmendorf AFB Chapel 2 in Anchorage, Alaska. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary this past July. Following their marriage, they resided in the communities of Anchorage, Alaska, and Hillsboro, Oregon until 1979 when they moved to their current home "the gentleman farm" in Cornelius, OR. In addition, in 2010 they purchased a home in El Mirage, Arizona, where they enjoyed spending time during the winter months.

He was a Captain in the United States Air Force where he served faithfully during the Vietnam War. He piloted missions out of Khe Sanh, calling in air strikes over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos. Wounded on an air mission by rifle fire, he spent 13 months at the Wright AFB Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He was awarded many medals, including the Purple Heart.

He worked as an Air Traffic Controller for many years and also pursued a Master's degree in Public Administration at Portland State University.

Among his special interests, he enjoyed the great outdoors, hunting and fishing. He went on many big game hunts in Alaska and the Bering Strait. Some of his trophies were a polar bear, Dall sheep, mountain goat, bull moose, elk, and deer. He went on many fishing expeditions and caught prized salmon and rainbow trout. He had a vast knowledge and appreciation of mother nature, plants, birds, and wildlife. Big or small he enjoyed it all.

Lou loved the Lord Jesus and was an active member of Laurel Community Church since 2000. He helped with Vacation Bible School, Fellowship, and the Safety Committee.

Survivors include his cherished wife, Lori Armbruster; his children David Armbruster of Cornelius, Oregon, Steven Armbruster of Beaverton, Oregon, Julie Schmidt, and her spouse Trevor of Camas, Washington; his brother Bob Armbruster and sister-in-law Geri of Pinckney, Michigan; his brother-in-law Frank Stanish and his wife Marie of Shavertown, Pennsylvania. Also, surviving are his precious and dearly loved grandchildren Amber Moux and her spouse Jonathan, Bethany Armbruster, Keira Schmidt, and Ethan Schmidt; and his nieces Buffie, Jamie & Jenna.

A graveside service was held for the family at Willamette National Cemetery on Thursday, September 8, 2022.
