========================

Burr, Carll S., Jr. — of Commack, Suffolk County, Long Island, N.Y.

Republican. Member of New York state assembly from Suffolk County 2nd District, 1896-98.

Member of New York state senate 1st District, 1905-08.

========================

Commack History:

Through out the 1890's Carll S. Burr Jr. divided his time between the family business and politics. With his father they continued to raise and train horses together with the help of a black laborer from North Carolina named Richard Beard. Carll S. Jr. had a large hall added to the side of the Smith Burr Inn, and a one mile track constructed just off Townline Road a half mile north of Burr Road. Barns and corrals were built on the east end of the track, and a small house for the keeper to live in.

Although his father never became a politician, Carll S. Burr Jr. heard the call and joined the Republican Party. He worked hard to help both Harrison and McKinley become president, and was a good friend of horse riding enthusiast Theodore Roosevelt. Since the days of Ulysses S. Grant the Burrs have been strong supporters of the Republican Party and Carll Burr Jr. was elected to the New York State Assembly from 1896-1898.
