John was a native of Virginia, served in the 5th Florida Cavalry during the Civil war and settled in Orlando in 1875. He served as Orange County's deputy circuit clerk for 8 years, then as Orlando's mayor in 1883-84, became a lawyer in 1884 and the following year was appointed as a county judge. In 1885 he became a member of the Orlando Hook and Ladder Company No.1. In 1890 he bought the old wooden courthouse, and then sold it to J W Wilmott who moved it to be a part of his Tremont Hotel
