Enlisted into Co. E. 4th Tennessee Infantry on May 15, 1861 at Germantown, Tennessee for 1 year. He was a resident of Obion County, Tennessee when he enlisted. He was wounded in the body at Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1862. A friend who served with him remembered him to be "one of the best and bravest men in the company. Strickly moral, very religious and gentlemanly in his conduct to others". His younger brother, Andrew Jackson Browder was killed at Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1862.
