Mrs. Gordon, Civic, Church Leader, Dies
DILLON — Mrs. Mayme Sawyer Gordon, 83, a civic and church leader and widow of Dr. R. K. Gordon, died Sunday in a local nursing home.
Born in Bennettsville, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Sawyer.
Mrs. Gordon was a 50 year member of St .Stephens United Methodist Church. She has represented the church on the state and national level.
Mrs. Gordon was a member of the board of trustees of Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C. and was a former president of the Palmetto Medical Auxiliary.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mayme G. Kingsland of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a son, Robert S. Gordon of Dillon; two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Brevard of Camden and Mrs. Ada Cooper of Columbia; a brother, the Rev. George Sterling Sawyer of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren. Services will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Stephens United Methodist Church with burial in Hamilton Cemetery.
