"From the first time I met her, it was her smile that captivated me," her husband, Tony Chiuso, said Sunday, crying as he remembered their first chance meeting at Morgan's Bar and Grill in Mokena. "I couldn't stop thinking about her. I just knew she was the one."
Carrie Hudek Chiuso worked as a counselor at her alma mater, Homewood-Flossmoor High School, a job her husband said she loved dearly.
Tony Chiuso described a whirlwind romance that started with a first date at Buffalo Wild Wings. Seven months later, he proposed in a Chicago hotel suite decorated with candles, rose petals and toy frogs to let her know she had found her prince.
"Her saying yes, I felt like the luckiest man," he said.
The two married June 10, 2006, at St. Joseph Church in Homewood with a reception at the Olympia Fields Country Club.
"That was the happiest day of my life," he said. "Just being able to share her and share that moment with her on the altar, of looking into her eyes and telling her how much I love her."
If his wedding day was the best day of his life, Saturday was the worst.
"It's just surreal," he said. "It's like living a bad dream."
Chiuso said he was waiting for Comcast to install cable and phone service Saturday while his wife picked up some presents from her mother and sister-in-law's homes to bring to her cousin's daughter's birthday party.
Carrie Chiuso was hoping to get to the party early because she and Tony planned to spend the day in Chicago, shopping on Michigan Avenue and enjoying dinner with some of her college friends, he said.
She called him to let her know she was heading to the bank and then into Lane Bryant to buy a shawl for their day out in the city, he said.
His next call came from a co-worker telling him about the shooting.
"I was trying to call her and call her and call her, and she wasn't answering her phone," he said.
