Eugene Victor Firth was born March 7, 1931 to G.S. Firth and Iola Kahoe Firth on a farm near Catesby, Oklahoma during a blizzard. The doctor drove his in from Follett, Texas to deliver him and was forced to stay overnight due to the storm. Gene was the third child having been born after twins, Madena Faye and Iris May. He was older brother to Arvilla Marie and Melvin Ray. He was raised on the farm until moving to Laverne, Oklahoma before seventh grade. He played all sports available to him and excelled in all of them. His favorite best sport was track. He graduated from Laverne High School in 1949 but played football for the class of 1950 due to a serious accident when he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle. He worked extremely hard to overcome his injuries and continued his love of sports. He attended Oklahoma Military Academy on a full athletic scholarship. He graduated from OMA in 1952 and continued his education at Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State University, on an athletic scholarship where he helped set many records in track. He graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Education degree with a double major in Science and Physical Education. He was later inducted in the Oklahoma State University Track Hall of Fame. He entered the United States Army in October 1954 as a 2nd Lieutenant after four years of R.O.T.C. He was medically discharged in February, 1955 after being injured in an accident. He married Eula Esther Conner May 29, 1955 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. He taught Science, coached 6-man football and started a track program in Forgan, Oklahoma. He also taught Science, coached boy's and girl's basketball and baseball in Cashion, Oklahoma. He then taught Science, coached football, basketball, and baseball in Luther, Oklahoma. In 1964 he came to Putnam City High School to teach Science and coach football, track, and swimming. His relay team set a state record for the fastest mile. During the last few years of his teaching tenure he also managed the swimming pools for Quail Creek Country Club then Sportsman's Country Club as well. He retired from teaching and became manager of Sportsman's Country Club for many years. He also managed Hillcrest Country Club for a short period of time. After the club business Gene started his own. He opened Economy School and Office Supply and ran the business for many years. After Economy closed he managed several pools for apartment complexes in Oklahoma City. Gene had been around swimming pools almost all his life and started his intimate knowledge of them by lifeguarding during high school in Laverne. He put his vast experience to use by inspecting pools and spas for the Oklahoma City/County Health Department. He retired from there in 2011 at the age of 80. Gene did many things in his life and met an abundance of people. He could fish, hunt, and fix just about anything on your car and in your home. His family loved him deeply and misses him greatly! He was always interested in sports of all kinds and remained active until he was physically unable to do so. He had a quick mind and was always loved to tell a joke or pull a fast one on you. He was full of spirit and could talk to you about anything. He loved his family. Gene is survived by Esther Conner Firth, his son, Bradley Eugene Firth, his daughter, Connie Jene' Firth, and his brother, Melvin Ray Firth. He also has two grandsons, Michael Brad Lee Firth, and Victor K. Conner Firth. He was also a great-grandfather to Aiden, Kara Lee and Anna Rose with Michael's wife Guilaine.
