George Washington Spotswood Thornton (c1795-1824) born at "Thornton Hill" Culpeper {now Rappahannock) County, Va. He married in 1824, Margaret (or Mildred) E. Hooe Buckner (1800-36), daughter of Ariss Buckner, of Prince William County, Va. They had an only child, Jane Washington Augusta Thornton (1824-87), who married in 1848, attorney and U.S. Senator, 1877-90, James Burnie Beck (1822-90)(Transylvania Law 1846), of Kentucky. Five children were Margaret Buckner (1849-71) who married in 1869, James Wilson Corcoran; Sophia Burnie (1851-52); Bettie Buckner (1853-1912)(dsp) who married in 1877, Brig. General Green Clay Goodloe (USMC)(1845-1917); George Washington Thornton; and James Burnie Beck, Jr. (1858-60).


George Washington Spotswood Thornton's mother was Jane Augusta Washington (1756-1833) who married in 1784, her second cousin, Col. John Thornton (c1743-1822), of "Thornton Hill," Rappahannock County, Va., son of Col. Francis, III (1711/2-49) and Frances Gregory Thornton (c1720-c93), of "Fall Hill," Spotsylvania County. He commanded a regiment of Virginia militia at the decisive battle of Yorktown in 1781. Their five children were Mary (c1785-c1806) who married c1801, Dr. Isaac Winston (1777-1867); Capt. John Augustine (c1787-1818); Frances Gregory (c1789-1828) who married c1805, a 1st cousin, Dr. George Alexander Thornton (c1787-1818), son of Col. William (1745-) and Martha Stuart Thornton; Jane Washington (c1795-1819) who married in 1816, her cousin Rev. Francis Thornton (1795-); and George Washington Spotswood Thornton (c1795-1824).
