Lamar Tooze Jr., 62, senior partner in the law firm of Tooze, Marshall, Shenker, Holloway and Duden, died of a heart attack while on a fishing trip in the Ochoco National Forest near Seneca Thursday evening.
Mr. Tooze became head of the law firm when his father, Lamar Tooze Sr., died in 1971.
Mr. Tooze was known nationwide for his expertise in product liability cases. He was frequently a special consultant on product liability defense and had established a nationwide system of education and administration for defense teams in this field.
Mr. Tooze was well-known for his favorite hobby, the restoring and collecting of antique steam-propelled farming and logging equipment. He was also a private pilot.
He was born Oct. 27, 1922, in Eugene, and moved with his family to Portland in 1925. He graduated from Lincoln High School, Reed College and Stanford University Law School. He was admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1948.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served as a gunnery officer on LCI-Gs, taking part in nine major invasions of Pacific Islands. He remained in the Navy Reserve and achieved the rank of captain.
Mr. Tooze was a member of the Multnomah County Bar and the Oregon State Bar, as well as the American Bar Association.
He was a member of Western Antique Powerland, Phi Delta Phi, the Multnomah Athletic Club, the University Club, the Arlington Club and the Sierra Club.
Mr. Tooze is survived by his wife, Mary Ausplund Tooze; a daughter, Mary Kristen Kern; his mother, Marie Tooze; two sisters, Virginia Tooze Wood and Leslie Tooze Brown, and two grandchildren. All are residents of Portland.
Family service will be private. His body will be cremated. The family suggests that remembrances be donations to a favorite charity.
