Velma was born on February 4, 1935, in Levant, Kansas to the late Roy Hayes and Marie Mildred Myer Gillispie. She was one of seven children.
She married the late Roy Lee Barrick, and together they raised their four children in New Martinsville, WV. Prior to her retirement, she worked for 30 years as the librarian at Steelton Elementary and Middle Schools. Velma was predeceased by her husband Roy, eldest son Michael Roy Barrick; brothers Arnold, Lyle, Lloyd, Melvin and sister Vera.
Velma was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed by those left to cherish her memory; sons, John (Juanita) of Clanton, AL, Thomas (Julie) of Charleston, WV; and daughter Barbara Tiano (Mark) of Manassas, VA. Eight grandchildren: Brianna, Janele, Jonathan, Kaleigh, Justin, Spencer, Sebastian, and Katherine. She had been blessed with four great grandchildren: Marley, Felix, Aria, and yet to be born boy Burdette. She is also survived by brothers Everett and Eldon Gillispie, and several nieces and nephews. She was a wonderful example of kindness and generosity. She loved to make and give beautiful handmade crocheted and stitched items which will be cherished heirlooms.
Family will receive friends on Sunday from 4-6 pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third Street, New Martinsville, where service will be held on Monday Sept. 26, 2022, at 11:00 am. Velma became an Orthodox Christian in the later part of her life; an Orthodox funeral and service of burial will be presided over by Father John El Massih.
Interment will follow at Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville.
