Marshall Dennis Burgess, 89, died Monday, September 19, 2022 at his residence under Hospice Care.

Rapid City - Marshall D. Burgess passed away peacefully on September 19, 2022 after a brief illness. He was born April 24, 1933 in Gettysburg, SD. He was the son of Dr. Roy and Bertha Mae Burgess.

Marshall graduated from West Phoenix High School and attended Richmond Professional Institute. He was served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After the Army, he worked at Mt. Rushmore where he met Sally Mulholland. He attended the University of Iowa during their courtship. They married, June 17, 1957. They lived in Lead, SD where he managed Terry Peak Chalet and worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He obtained a position working at the School of Mines and Technology and moved to Rapid City. He worked as the Business Office Manager then the Coordinator of Personnel Services and Special Purchases. He retired in 1995.

He was active in the community, holding several positions in local organizations including Canyon Lake Little League, United Way, and the Joe Foss Pheasant Hunt. Whether it was taking in a stray or adopting from the humane society, he always had a dog by his side.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother (Robert), mother of his children (Sally), and grandson (Cadden).

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister; 4 children; 7 grandchildren; as well as multiple great grandchildren and nieces.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11 am October 17, 2022 at Osheim and Schmidt Funeral Home. Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
