He was born in the town of Shushi and studied at its Diocesan School and later its Russian school. Around 1884 he moved to the city of Baku and then two years later to study in France. After studying art in Marseille, he went to Paris's Académie Julian from 1897-1900. He then returned home to Shusha before settling in Rostov-on-Don in Russia where he taught painting until 1921. At that time the Soviets had recently taken over Armenia and he moved there, working some years later as a teacher at the Art Industrial College (now Terlemezyan State College of Fine Arts). He was awarded the title People's Artist of the Armenian SSR and received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. Upon his death in 1940 he was buried in what became the Artist's Pantheon section at Tokhmakh Cemetery, perhaps the first such artist buried there.
