Anthropologist. Harriet Kupferer was an American anthropologist most famous for her research on the North Carolina Cherokees which culminated in the book, The Principal People. In the spring of 1958, she participated in the UNC-CH Cherokee Project of the Cross-Cultural Laboratory. Many consider her research on the Cherokees to be seminal. She was one of the earliest and most prominent PhD recipients at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She went on to chair the Anthropology Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and was much admired by her students and colleagues. The Kupferer Award is named in her honor.
