Pete Alvarado
Monterey
Sept. 10, 1923 to Sept. 26, 2022

Pete Alvarado died Sept. 26, 2022 at Nazareth Rose Garden of Napa, just 16 days after celebrating his 99th birthday.

Pete was born, along with his twin brother Nicolas, to Pedro and Angela Alvarado on September 10, 1923 in Gonzales, CA. He attended Bay View Elementary School and Monterey High, but never graduated. Like many of his siblings, Pete worked for a time on Cannery Row.

In 1942, Pete enlisted in the Army to fight in World War II. "Pete trained at Fort Ord and is serving with a signal corps unit attached to the 2nd armored division in Germany. He took part in the invasion of France," the then-Monterey Peninsula Herald wrote in a small feature about "Brothers in Service," Private Pete and his brother PFC Larry in June 1945.

Pete came home from the war that year, and worked at the Naval Postgraduate School as a custodian until he retired. For a brief period he co-owned a pub—The Tradewinds—where the family used to congregate. He was always the life of the party, and was known to rattle a set of maracas whenever music played.

A lifelong resident of Monterey, Pete was a confirmed bachelor and lived much of his life at 1098 David Avenue.

Following the death of his sister Virginia Lucero in February of last year, Pete was the last of his generation. He was also preceded in death by brothers Hilario, known as Lalo; Phil, a popular Monterey boxer in his day; twin Nick; and Manuel; as well as sister Florence Trujillo. Pete's father, Pedro, was crushed beneath a truck while working on the new Carmel-Pacific Grove Highway in 1930—a story that was front page news for the then-Monterey Peninsula Herald, though the article misspelled the family's last name. His mother Angela died in 1963. He will be laid to rest near her at Monterey's San Carlos Cemetery (792 Fremont St.)

Pete is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Oct, 14, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Mission Mortuary (450 Camino El Estero) from 9:30 to noon. His burial at San Carlos Cemetery will follow.
