Lieutenant Robert Septimus Grenfell, 12th (The Prince of Wales's) Royal Regiment of Lancers. He was the son of Pascol Du Pre Grenfell (JP, DL, merchant) and Sofia Grenfell of Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. He was commissioned into the 12th Lancers as a 2nd Lieutenant on 9 Dec 1896. Following the establishment of the Mahdist State in Sudan, and the subsequent threat to the regional status quo and to British-occupied Egypt, the British government decided to send an expeditionary force, under Major General Kitchener with the task of overthrowing the Khalifa. Lieutenant Grenfell was attached to the 21st Lancers who were part of the expeditionary force in Sudan and was killed in action at the Battle of Omdurman on 2 Sep 1898.

He is also commemorated on a brass memorial plaque in the Royal Garrison Church of All Saints, Aldershot, Rushmoor Borough, Hampshire, England.
