MRS. M. B. JONES DIED ON FRIDAY
ONE OF THE CITY'S OLDEST RESIDENTS AND A SISTER OF LATE JUSTICE JOSEPH F. BARNARD
WAS IN HER 88TH YEAR
Poughkeepsie lost one of its oldest residents on Friday morning in the death of Mrs. Martha Barnard Jones, sister of the late Judge Joseph F. Barnard and widow of Hon. Samuel Jones, who was a Judge of the Superior Court in New York City.
Mrs. Jones was 88 years old and was the daughter of Captain Frederick Barnard who came from Poughkeepsie from Nantucket in his early years to take part in the whaling business. He was the first agent of the old Poughkeepsie Whaling Company, incorporated in 1842. Captain Barnard was a prominent citizen, one of the charter trustees of the Savings Bank and interested in several enterprises. The Barnard house on Cannon Street, where he lived during his later years was built by Walter Cunningham and bought by Captain Barnard about __(1845?). Mrs. Jones added the part on the west side containing the dining room. It is one of the fine old mansions of the days of the Improvement Party. During her married life Mrs. Jones lived in New York in the winter, but with that exception she had lived in the house all her life. Her husband died about __(?) years ago, and her brother Judge Joseph F. Barnard nine years ago in January. Her only sister, Miss Margaret A. Barnard died about four years ago.
Mrs. Jones had no children and her nearest surviving relatives are nephews and nieces: Mrs. James F. Banks of New York and Frederick Barnard of this city, children of Judge Joseph F. Barnard and the following children of Judge George G. Barnard of New York: Mrs. Alfred Wagstaff and Mrs. Raymond L. Ward of New York, Mrs. Frank R. Seabury of Boston, George G. Barnard of Amityville, L. I. and John C. Barnard of Litchfield, Conn.
Mrs. Jones was baptized by Rev. Dr. Reed in Christ Church and was always much interested in the welfare of the parish.
