ANDERSON, LEWIS DANIEL, JR., of Mountain Brook, died Friday, October 24, 2003 after a brief and very courageous battle with cancer. He was 49 years old. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dan was reared in Memphis, Tennessee, and baptized at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greensboro, Alabama. Dan attended Texas Christian University on a basketball scholarship and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated from Rhodes College in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. While at Rhodes, Dan was named all conference in basketball and was a social affiliate of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Dan worked at Compass Bank in Birmingham for 24 years where he became a senior vice president of the correspondent and investment banking division. He most recently was a senior vice president at Sterne, Agee & Leach in the fixed income division. He was a member of The Cathedral Church of the Advent and Mountain Brook Club. Active in all aspects of Mountain Brook athletics, Dan coached many youth league teams and was the coach of the 12 and under AAU Alabama Ice Boys Basketball team. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Birmingham Youth Lacrosse League. Dan was an avid sports enthusiast and included snow skiing, traveling, and sailing among his many interests. Dan is survived by Tracey Hewett Anderson, his wife of 21 years; his three sons, Lewis Daniel Anderson III, Christopher Hewett Anderson, and Wiley Allan Anderson; his mother Stella Cobbs Anderson; his sisters Evelyn Anderson McGehee (William Boyd III) and Lida Anderson Cotton (Terry Winfield); and his brother Tunstall Cobbs Anderson (Lynne Rowan). His father, Dr. Lewis Daniel Anderson, preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, October 27 at the Cathedral Church of the Advent. Honorary pallbearers include James G. Ramsey, Rodney E. Rushing, Thomas P. King, David G. Hymer, Edward Roberts Leatherbury, Mark Christian King, John Arthur Donovan, Steven M. McCarroll, Robert Donald Plosser, John Clifford Seay. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, 2017 6th Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203 or to the L. Dan Anderson Memorial Fund, c/o Mountain Brook Athletics, P.O. Box 530774, Birmingham, AL 35253.
