On April 13, 1881 Henry and Matie were married in Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin. They were the parents of three sons. Their oldest son, Clyde Henry, born on January 24, 1881, and their second son, Harvey Lee, born April 17, 1884, were born in Columbus, Colorado County, Texas where Henry was working with his father as a carpenter on a construction job. When that job was completed, Henry moved on to Mississippi City, Harrison County, Mississippi where their third son, Cecil Evans, was born on December 5, 1885. Henry went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad in 1888 working in various locations in Missouri before Santa Fe transferred him to Galesburg, Illinois as the Station Agent in 1903.

Henry retired on September 1, 1938 after fifty years with the Santa Fe Railroad. He and Matie planned to go to San Bernardino, California for treatment of Matie's cancer which had been discovered in May. They lived with their son Cecil at his home there while she was undergoing radium treatments.
Matie E. Machen died of uterine cancer at 12:35 p.m. on August 6, 1939 at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 9 days in the St. Bernardine Hospital in San Bernardino, California. Her son Cecil was the informant for her Death Certificate. She was buried by the Mark B. Shaw Company on August 8, 1938 in Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino.
