William Allen Barker was the fourth child born to Jacob and Susan (Garner) Barker, born March 14, 1796, near Jamestown, Virginia,
William Allen married Sarah Hobbs, daughter of James and Mary (Dollard) Hobbs.
Sarah's father had emigrated to Virginia from Lincolnshire, England, about 1794. James Hobbs, a distiller of fine wines, was a valiant soldier in the War of 1812.
Sarah, born February 23, 1800, in Bedford County, Virginia, near the "Peaks of Otter",
was said to have descended from a branch of one of the royal lines of England. She was referred to as a woman of "distinguished intellectuality".
William enlisted with the American troops and was a soldier in the war of 1812.
He took part in the Battle of New Orleans, January 8, 1815, with Andrew Jackson.
After becoming paralyzed in 1823, he made beautiful specimens of crochet work and knitting.
He died Feburary 14, 1837, in that part of Giles County, Virginia.
Sarah (Hobbs) Barker was left quite young to care for her eight children. In the spring of 1838 she moved to Mercer County, now West Virginia, where she rented land from "Bobby" Lilly on what was called Bluestone Hills. She was later taken to Kansas City, Kansas, by her son James B. Barker where she died July 8, 1878 age seventy-eight.
William was a slave driver for Captain Ed Pate from 1818 to 1823 when he suffered paralysis from hips down and lived a invalid until his death in 1837
He was a soldier during War of 1812
