Born in Hanover Germany, John (Jan Janssen Jelken/Jelten), immigrated to America at the age of 7, on Dec. 26, 1846 aboard the Ship Everhard. He was with his parents Jan Janssen and Gerdje and siblings Gretje, Anna, Reiner and Sophia. They lived in Missouri and Illinois for a time where sister Emma was born, then settled in the German settlement of Febing in Nemaha Co., NE. He fought in the Civil War and married Anna Catherine Dirks on Aug. 23, 1863, two months after his return from battle. They had 14 children among three states (NE, KS, CA), as they migrated westward.
