Columbarium Vault
Below this plaque there lie at rest the ashes
of those persons who were cremated between
1923-1967 at the original Waikumete Crematorium

These ashes were placed in the safe keeping of
The Auckland City Council as the cemetery
authority and were held with in the historic
chapel adjacent until moved in the year 1978
to this final place of rest

The ashes are in a vault beneath the plaque near the chapel. They were kept in the little old chapel for many years, but it needed some major restoration work, so a decision was made to inter all the ashes in a below ground vault for safe keeping. It is a very beautiful and peaceful place and there often bunches of flowers placed on the plaque.
