Charles was one of five sons of Charles William PATTERSON (1865-1936) and Fannie E. WILSON (1869-1912). He was born in Hopkins County, Kentucky. In 1900, he was with his family in Dawson Springs, Hopkins County, Kentucky; he showed on the census as "Chas. E. Patterson." By 1910, the family had moved to Simpson, Johnson County, Illinois, and Charles showed on the census as "Charles E. Patterson." On September 14, 1914, he married Goldie May HANES. He is listed on the record as "Charles Evert Patterson." According to "Indiana Marriages, 1810-2001," he reported his birth date as July 6, 1893, when he married Goldie. It is a clear match: The record reports his parents as Charles W. Patterson and Fannie Wilson, and it reports his place of birth as Hopkins County, Kentucky.

On October 28, 1916, Charles' first child was born -- Wauneta Elouise Patterson. He is listed on his daughter's birth certificate as "Everett Patterson."

On September 12, 1918, Charles filed his Draft Registration Card and reported his birth as July 6, 1898. The registration card lists him as "Charles Everett Patterson," His wife was Goldie May PATTERSON. They lived in Bremen, Indiana. Charles worked for John HANES, farming. Mr. Hanes likely was Charles' father-in-law. Charles and Goldie's son William Elden Patterson was born in December 1918; Charles was listed on the birth certificate as "Evert Patterson." He was 20 years old, and Goldie was 24. By 1920, the family was living in German Township, Marshall County, Indiana, and Charles was working as a molder in a foundry. He showed on the census as "Everette Patterson." In July 1923, Charles and Goldie's son Max was born; Charles was listed on Max's birth certificate as "Everett Patterson." By 1930, Charles was the proprietor of a garage. He and his family were living in Bourbon Township, Marshall County, Indiana. He showed on the census as "Everett Patterson."

The marriage between Charles and Goldie had ended sometime before November 1935 when Goldie married Ernest P. FRANCIS in Elkhart County, Indiana.

In October 1940, according to the WW II Draft Card for his son William, Charles was living in Mishawaka, on Day Road and was farming there. However, he has not been found on the U.S. Census. Charles' by-then former wife Goldie was living in Bourbon, Indiana, with their daughter Wauneta and her husband (Harold Martin), and with their son Max. Goldie reported four years of college, and she was the owner of a restaurant. She was listed as "Goldie Patterson," and her 2nd husband (Ernest Francis) was not in the household; Goldie was listed as married. By 1950, Goldie was listed as divorced.

There is a possible match for Charles on the 1950 census. There is an "Evert C Patterson" in South Bend, Indiana, living as a lodger in what looks like a group house with five unrelated adults. That man was reported as 47 years old, born in Kentucky, with marital status "separated." He worked as a packer in the shipping department of a farm equipment manufacturing company. If it was Charles, his age was reported as five years younger. The address was 816 Edy.

Sometime before 1960, Charles married a widowed woman. When they married, her name was Mary K. PALMER; her maiden name was Mary K. CICHOS, and she was the widow of Cecil Warren PALMER, who had died in October 1952. By 1960, Charles and Mary were living at 332 N. St. Louis Blvd., in South Bend, Indiana. Charles was working as a janitor at H. D. Lees. That likely was the H. D. Lee Mercantile Company, garment manufacturers (the jeans makers).

That 332 N. St. Louis Blvd. was Charles' address when he died. Cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver (one year). His wife Mary was the informant on his death certificate. She reported his occupation as "Oliver Corp. and musician." His wife provided no information for Charles' father; she named his mother as "Mrs. Myra Sullivan." That was the name of his step-mother, who had married again after Charles' father died in 1936. In 1970 when Charles died, his step-mother as still living. Charles died in South Bend St. Joseph Hospital. His death certificate reports that burial was in Fairview Cemetery, in Mishawaka, Indiana.
