RALPH 'BUDDY' GILBERT

Ralph (Buddy) Carl Gilbert Jr., age 86, previously of Schroeder Drive,
Manitowoc, died on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, with his family at his side,
at the home of his son, 1805 Lissa Lane, Manitowoc, where he has been
residing the last 27 months.
Ralph was born on March 9, 1923, in Manitowoc, the son of the late Ralph
and Lorraine (Woellert) Gilbert. He attended Manitowoc parochial and public
schools. Ralph worked for his uncle at Sepnafski's Meats as a butcher
before entering the U.S. Navy. He joined the U.S. Navy serving aboard the
USS Seattle from 1942 until 1946. He married the former Catherine (McCann)
Gilbert in New York on Jan. 12, 1944. Catherine preceded him in death on
October 1, 2001. Ralph and Catherine moved their family to Manitowoc in
1946. He worked at Becker meats after returning to the area. Ralph owned
and operated a family hamburger stand in the late '40s before he purchased a
meat market on Meadow Lane. Ralph finished his employment at Hamilton
Industries, retiring after 32 years on June 1, 1988. After his retirement, Ralph
enjoyed working outdoors doing odd jobs, cutting lawns and snow shoveling
for area businesses until 2002. Over the years, Ralph and Catherine enjoyed
traveling throughout the U.S. with their grandchildren. He enjoyed his faithful
buddy and companion "Gypsy."
Survivors include a daughter: Lorraine Hacker; a son and daughter-in-law:
Michael and Geraldine (Jeri) Gilbert; and son-in-law: Robert Siehr and friend:
Sue Keil, all of Manitowoc; nine grandchildren: Jennifer (Joe) Stauffer, Patric
Siehr, Brian Hacker, David Hacker, Erin (Ben) Britton, Jon (Michelle) Gilbert,
all of Manitowoc, Jason (Kathy) Siehr, Whitelaw, Colin Hacker, Mishicot,
Jenna Losse and friend Jake Szynskie, Stevens Point; eight great- grandsons:
Travis and Mark Hacker, Devan and Wyatt Siehr, Samuel and Elijah Stauffer,
Declan Britton and Cameron Kleckner; a sister: Violet Leclair, all of Manitowoc;
a sister-in-law: Patsy Thompson, Brooklyn, New York; his extended family of
Anna May Troullier and her children and grandchildren; many nieces, nephews
and friends also survive. Ralph was preceded in death by his wife: Catherine; a
daughter: Diane Siehr; a son-in-law: Terry Hacker; one sister and two
brothers-in-law: Beatrice and Eddie Powalisz, Rueben Leclair; three
sisters-in-law: Mildred Space, Harriet McDermott, and Dorothy Morgan;
and a brother-in-law: William McCann.
Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, April 16, 2009, at St. Francis
of Assisi on Marshall, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial
will be the Rev. Daniel Schuster with entombment at Knollwood Mausoleum,
town of Kossuth.
The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall,
Manitowoc, from 9 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 2009, until the time of service
at noon.
