Maria Hansen, 93, formerly of New Holstein, entered her eternal rest on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay.
"But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." 1 Corinthians 2:9
Maria was born October 20, 1926 in Vrbovo, in the former European country of Yugoslavia, now the country of Slovenia; daughter of the late Giovanni "Ivan" and Maria (Sustar) Basa.
Maria and Eugene F. Hansen met in Trieste, Italy. Maria was employed as a seamstress providing uniform tailoring to members of the United States Army located in Trieste during the Korean War. Eugene was serving in the US Army as a Dental Technician in Trieste at that time. They met over a pair of pants that needed mending, enjoyed each other's company, fell in love and were married. Later, after Eugene had returned to the states and prepared a home, Maria with their infant daughter joined Eugene in the United States. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2004.
Maria proudly earned her United States Citizenship. She was employed at Tecumseh in New Holstein for more than 20 years. After her retirement, Eugene and Maria enjoyed their time of travel. Not only did they go back to her birth country to visit family, but also traveled to Italy, England, France, Germany, Canada and a cruise to Mexico. They traveled to states on the east coast including Maine and Vermont, and to other states including Alaska, Washington, Arizona, and Colorado.
Maria was a devoted wife, a caring mother and a loving grandmother. She spent much of her time sewing clothing for her family, caring for her vegetable garden and then processing the results of her efforts to provide her family healthy foods. She found pleasure in the flower gardens around her home and loved watching the hummingbirds that visited the feeder just outside her screened-in porch. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles in her free time. In her later years she found comfort in the daily Mass and enjoyed many of the activities, especially Bingo, at The Court at Felician Village in Manitowoc.
She is survived by her children, Linda (Allen) Dietrich of Louis Corners, Helen (Keith) Koenig of New Holstein, Dolores (Robert) Deehr of Osman, and David Hansen of Howards Grove; son-in-law Gary Bach of Appleton; 14 grandchildren, William (Shannon) Dietrich, Adriane (Nathan) Melby, Christina (Joseph) Drexler, Jennifer Koenig (fiancé Steve Mleziva), Michael (Becky) Koenig, Carri (Todd) Dellenbach, Cheryl (Mark) Prucha, Robert (Charlotte) Deehr, Alexandra (David) Reimer, Jonathan (Madeline) Bach, Rebecca Hansen (fiancé Josh Moline), Kyle Hansen; 19 great-grandchildren, 4 great great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Maria in death were her husband Eugene; a daughter Nancy Bach; her grandchildren Aaron and Sherrie Koenig; her parents Giovanni and Maria (Sustar) Basa; her parents in-law Walter and Matilda (Graf) Hansen; her brothers Evan Basa, Anton Basa, Francis Basa and baby brother Francis; her sisters Franciska Sav, Christina Jagodnik; her brothers-in-law Charles (Grace) Hansen, Gilbert (Arlene) Hansen and her sisters-in-law Eunice (Gilbert) Erbach, Eliene (Charles) Altmann, Ruth (Frank "Jim") Thixton.
Per Maria's wishes, there will be a private funeral service for the immediate family. Her final resting place will be by Eugene's side at the Knollwood Memorial Park Mausoleum in rural Manitowoc.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Samaritan's Purse, Safe Harbor of Sheboygan County and Hope House of Manitowoc County.
Maria's family wishes to extend a heartfelt appreciation to the staffs and caregivers at The Court at Felician Village in Manitowoc, Holy Family Memorial Hospital in Manitowoc and St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, for the care and compassion given to Maria and her family.
