Edward Gray was the youngest son of Dr Alan and Mrs Gray of York house, Chaucer rd, Cambridge. He was educated at Winchester college and, after leaving in October 1916, almost immediately joined the army serving the Rifle brigade ( 6th Bn. attd. 1st Bn. ) before his first posting to France in June 1917. Less than a year later, Edward, whilst on a mission to hunt down a troublesome sniper, was shot and killed by the very man he was searching for.
