Dr. Charles Philip "Doc" Akin passed away peacefully at his home, The Flying 180 Ranch in Driftwood, Texas, on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at the age of 87.

Doc was born in Hebbronville, Texas, the only child of Delbert and Wanda Phillips Akin, on August 22, 1934.

After his family moved to Austin, Texas, Doc attended school there, graduating from Austin High School. Upon completion of college at Sam Houston State University, he pursued his love of the sciences at Baylor College of Dentistry, graduating with his D.D.S. in 1962.

For years, Doc served his community by providing excellent dental care in Austin and San Antonio, even incorporating his love for flying by attaining his pilot's license and flying between Austin and San Antonio to his practices. One of his most prized possessions was his Cessna 180 tail-dragger airplane.

He was a proud member of the Knights Templar San Marcos Commandery No. 56.

Charles had four children by his first wife, Mildred; Larry Akin, Janice Akin, Scott Akin and Brenda Akin.

Doc met the love of his life, Patsy "Patty" Lamun Pruitt in 1966 in Scarborough's Department Store. Certain of their future together after a brief courtship, they married in Austin on June 17th that same year. Combining their blended family of his four children and Patty's children Mike, Cara and Joni, they began their extraordinary life together.

In 1977, Doc had the foresight to purchase a beautiful 100+-acre property in Driftwood, now known as The Flying 180 Ranch. There he built a shop big enough to fully enjoy his passion for working on vehicles and machinery like their travel coach. He loved tinkering there, generously sharing his talent and expertise for fixing things with neighbors and friends.

Doc and Patty enjoyed a beautiful life together, being married 55 years at the time of his passing. Together they shared passions of hunting, traveling in their coach, flying in their plane and simply spending time with their family and friends. When grandchildren came along, Doc was so proud! He doted on them and took them into his heart with a passion!

Charles leaves behind his loving wife Patty along with their seven children and their families: Larry Akin, Janice Akin, Scott Akin and Brenda Akin and their spouses, Mike Pruitt and his wife Lisa, Cara Pruitt Wyland and her husband Bill and Joni Pruitt Avery and her partner JR Hogg. His grandchildren Jonathan, Christopher, Tyler, Chelsea, Brandon, Dustin, Haley, John David, Wrangler and Taylor miss him already.

Visitation will be 2:00PM on Friday, April 29, 2022 at the Driftwood United Methodist Church. Services will be at 3:00PM. Burial to follow at Driftwood Cemetery.
