Officer Seely was shot and killed after responding to a home to serve a domestic violence warrant.
Officer Seely was survived by his wife Debbie Walters Seely, 33, of Anchorage who was pregnant with their first child*;his parents Norman Richard Seely and Dixie Cottrell Seely of Price, UT; his brother David Seely of CO;his sisters, Sheree Seely Gilley of Fl and Lorraine Seely Martin of CO; his grandfather, Lorin Milton, and five nieces and nephews.
The Memorial service for Officer Seely was held on Thursday, Nov 7, at the Anchorage Baptist Temple with APD Chief Dennis O'Leary officiating. Six members of the Anchorage Police Department served as pallbearers and more then 2,000 mourners, including hundreds of uniformed law enforcement officers from APD, the Alaska State Troopers, the Anchorage Fire Department, and other agencies attended the service. (The service was also broadcast on local television).
At the Anchorage memorial service for Seely, a military rifle team gave a 21-gun salute outside the church and the Air Force band played "Taps". The hearse was followed by more then 200 patrol cars with flashing lights to Anchorage International Airport where the body was transported to Utah for burial.
Additional services were held on the same day at the Green River,UT L.D.S. Chapel. The Utah State Police escorted the casket from Green River to the Fausett Mortuary in Price,UT, for burial in that city.
A brief service was held on Oct. 31 at the grave site in Price City Cemetery where the American flag from the casket was presented to the family. The service also included the playing of "Taps" and a gun salute.

During the morning hours of October 26, 1996, Officer Dan Seely was dispatched to a Chugiak home to serve a warrant on a man for domestic violence. The suspect, who was wearing a hidden shoulder holster, shot Officer Seely in the face and then fled to a neighboring house where his estranged wife and two children had taken refuge. There, the suspect shot and killed his five-year-old daughter and four-year-old son. The man also seriously wounded his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life. Officer Seely died an hour later at Providence Hospital.
Officer Seely’s wife, Deborah, who was expecting the couple’s first child, was an on-duty police dispatcher at the time of the shootings.
Officer Dan Seely was forty years old at the time of his death. He served with the Anchorage Police Department for ten years. He is survived by his wife and son who was born seven months after his death.
