Feb 26, 1941, MANSFIELD NEWS JOURNAL:
George Washington Shreffler, 93, father of Dr. Burdette E. Schreffler, died at the home of his son, 614 Bigelow Road, late Tuesday afternoon, following a brief illness.

A pioneer, who could recall many interesting incidents of the earlier years, he liked to reminisce about meeting Abraham Lincoln when he was in Kankakee, Ill. when Mr. Schreffler was a boy of 10 years. Lincoln was campaigning for a public office in that year of 1857 and it was at that time that Mr. Schreffler had the opportunity to see him.

While later serving as conductor of schools at Alma, Ill. Mr. Schreffler gave William Jennings Bryan his first chance at a teaching position. He also witnessed the Great Chicago Fire. His great grandfather was a bodyguard of the first president, George Washington, and it was with great pride that he used that name for his own.

He had resided in Mansfield for the past five years. He was born in Kankakee, Ill Sept. 15, 1847, but moved to Fremont when a boy. Before his retirement he was a general contractor.

Surviving are nine children, Dr. Schreffler of Mansfield, Sam of Woodville, George and John of Fremont, Benjamin H of Tommyhawk, Wis., Mrs. Ruth Woland of Cleveland, Mrs. Harry Copper of Bourbonnais, Ill., Mrs. Frank Goodwin of Wheeling, W.Va. and Mrs. O D Bauman of Fremont.

The body was removed to the Jones Memorial, but will be taken to his old home in Fremont where funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. Burial will be made there at the Four Mile Cemetary there.
