Rev. James M. Pennington, 78, of the Smith Creek Community, passed away Nov. 8, 1978 at the Scott County Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home.

He was the son of the late Andy and Mary Grant Pennington.

He was ordained a Baptist Minister in May 1937, he served as pastor of the New Salem Baptist Church for 35 years and was pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church for 13 years where he was a member.

Rev. Pennington was preceded in death by two sons, Earl and Glen Pennington; a daughter, Madge Madden; four brothers: Elvin, Luster, Phelan and Milford Pennington and two sisters, Lillie Abesheen and Edna Lay. Survivors: his wife, Mrs. Alene Raines Pennington: a son: James Darrell Pennington, two daughters, Miss Vera Pennington and Mrs. Iva Jean Calhoun; two sisters: Miss Ollie Pennington and Mrs. Helen Laxton; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted from the Mt. Zion Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Friday, November 10th, with Rev. Obis Byrd, Rev. Robert Ellis, Rev. Robert Williams, Rev. Tom Owens, and Rev. Ernie Murray officiating. Burial followed in the Lloyd Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge of arrangements.
