Melvin "Mel" Sylvester Curtis was born May 26, 1916 in Uncas, near Kaw City, Kay County, Oklahoma; one of four children born to Roy Sylvester Curtis and Izetta "Zetta" (Andrews) Curtis. His father was a Teamster and his mother was a homemaker. He met Helen Harris at the Grange Hall in Blackwell, Oklahoma. They shared 69 years of marriage before her passing and were blessed with two children, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and four great-great-great grandchildren.
Mel has lived in Braman, Oklahoma, Wichita, Kansas, San Bernadino, California and Enid, Oklahoma. He owned and operated Mel Curtis Electric in San Bernardino for many years. He received a special honor as an electrician in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 477 in San Bernadino.
Mel loved to dance and his favorite song was "In The Mood". He attended the Christian Church in Braman and the First Assembly of God Church in San Bernadino for many years. Spring was his favorite time of the year when the flowers were blooming and the birds were singing. His favorite childhood memory was riding a horse to school in Newkirk, Oklahoma.
He left us with these words of wisdom for a long life: "Be honest, eat right, sleep and work hard."
Melvin Sylvester Curtis was inducted into the CENTENARIANS OF OKLAHOMA HALL OF FAME at the age of 101 ½ years. He lived to see his 106th birthday. His Centenarians of Oklahoma file will be sent to the Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City to become a permanent part of Oklahoma History.
